What is a Foot Fracture?
A foot fracture is a break in one or more of the bones in the foot, which can occur due to trauma, stress, or overuse. The foot contains 26 bones, and fractures can range from small cracks (stress fractures) to complete breaks. Depending on the severity, foot fractures can significantly affect mobility and may require anything from rest to surgical intervention for proper healing.
What causes a Foot Fracture?
Foot fractures are commonly caused by sudden trauma, such as dropping a heavy object on the foot, twisting injuries, or falls. Stress fractures can occur from repetitive impact, such as long-distance running, or from overuse during activities that put continuous strain on the foot. Other factors, like weakened bones due to osteoporosis, can also increase the risk of fractures.
What are the symptoms of a Foot Fracture?
Symptoms of a foot fracture include sharp, intense pain at the site of the fracture, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight on the foot. In more severe fractures, there may be visible deformity or a bone protruding through the skin. Pain often worsens with movement or pressure, and depending on the type of fracture, the foot may feel unstable or weak.
What is the best treatment for a Foot Fracture?
Following a foot fracture, it is essential to connect with a physical therapist to develop a personalized course of treatment.
Mild foot fractures can sometimes be treated with immobilization, such as wearing a cast or boot, along with a structured physical therapy program to restore strength and mobility in the foot.
Severe foot fractures, particularly those that are displaced or affect joint stability, often require surgery. In these cases, pre-surgery "prehab" work with a physical therapist can improve surgical outcomes, and post-surgery rehabilitation is crucial for regaining strength, mobility, and function.
